Head-to-head comparison

ChatGPT vs Claude: Which One Should You Actually Pay For?

Short answer: ChatGPT is the broader all-rounder with the bigger ecosystem, Claude is the more careful writer and stronger everyday coding partner. Here's what that means for your wallet and your workflow.

ChatGPT's prices were verified on OpenAI's official pricing page from an EU (Italy) location, in euros. Claude's prices were verified on Anthropic's official pricing page, in US dollars — Anthropic's Pro plan runs $17/month billed annually or $20/month billed monthly. We're showing each in its own verified currency rather than converting, since exchange rates shift and we'd rather show you the real number than an approximation. Both companies also sell separate Team/Business/Enterprise plans not covered here.

Where each one actually pulls ahead

ChatGPT's edge is breadth. Custom GPTs, a huge base of existing guides and integrations, native image generation, and a coding-focused mode (Codex) all live under one subscription. If you want one assistant that does a bit of everything reasonably well, ChatGPT covers more ground out of the box.

Claude's edge is depth on specific tasks. It tends to follow detailed instructions more literally, produces writing that reads less like a template, and is frequently the pick of professional developers for everyday coding work. If your work is writing- or code-heavy rather than broad and varied, that focus tends to show.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use both for free before deciding?

Yes — both have genuinely usable free tiers, not just short trials. Running the same real task through each one for a week is the most reliable way to see which fits your work.

Which one is cheaper?

At the entry paid tier, ChatGPT's Go plan (€8/month) has no direct Claude equivalent — Claude's first paid tier is Pro, roughly comparable in price to ChatGPT Plus rather than Go. Below that, both offer free plans with no cost.

Which one is better for coding?

Both are strong. Claude is widely used specifically for its coding ability and ships a first-class coding tool (Claude Code); ChatGPT covers coding well too through Codex. If coding is your main use case, it's worth trialling both on your own codebase rather than taking either reputation at face value.

Our take

Neither tool is a strictly better version of the other — they're built with different emphases. ChatGPT is the safer general-purpose default if you want one subscription that covers chat, images, and casual coding. Claude is worth the switch (or a second subscription) if your work is genuinely writing- or code-heavy and you'd rather have depth on those tasks than breadth across everything.
