AI Chatbots & Answer Engines
General-purpose AI assistants you talk to directly — for writing, coding, research, and everyday questions. We've reviewed four of the biggest: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity. Here's how they stack up and which one(s) are actually worth paying for.
What this category covers
These four tools all do the same basic thing — you type a question or a task, they respond — but they've grown into genuinely different products. ChatGPT has the broadest ecosystem of custom GPTs and integrations. Claude leans into careful writing and agentic coding tools. Gemini is bundled directly into Gmail, Docs, and Google Search, with cloud storage attached. Perplexity is built specifically around cited, sourced answers rather than open-ended conversation. Most people end up using one as a daily driver and occasionally trying a second for a specific task.

Do I need more than one of these?
Most people don't. Pick the one whose free plan fits how you already work — Gmail/Docs users usually gravitate to Gemini, heavy coders to Claude or ChatGPT — and only add a second subscription if you hit a specific gap, like wanting Perplexity's cited answers for research.
Which one is cheapest to actually use well?
All four have usable free tiers, so the honest answer is: try the free version of each for your actual tasks before paying anything. Gemini's paid entry tier is the cheapest of the four in euros; exact currencies and billing terms differ, so check the pricing table above.
Is Perplexity really an "AI chatbot" like the other three?
Not exactly — it's built around search-and-cite rather than open-ended conversation, and it lets you pick the underlying model (including Claude) per query. We group it here because people researching "which AI assistant should I use" usually end up comparing it against the other three anyway.
Our take
There's no single winner in this category — the four tools have converged on being "good enough" at general chat while differentiating on ecosystem, integration, and specialization. Start from your existing tools (Google Workspace user? Try Gemini first) and your actual use case (heavy coding? Claude or ChatGPT; research with sources? Perplexity), rather than chasing whichever benchmark result is trending this month.
